Andy DeLao: Clinician-Guided AI – iSeg Highlights the Future of Personalized Lung Cancer Care

Andy DeLao, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at GE Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Big news in cancer care!

Scientists at Northwestern Medicine have developed their own new AI tool, iSeg, that can segment, define, and contour lung tumors on CT scans even as they move with each breath (4D).

This 3D deep learning model is among the first to segment tumors dynamically, offering a new level of precision for clinicians.

Here’s what makes iSeg promising:
  • Performs on par with expert clinicians
  • Detects tumor areas that may be missed during manual review
  • Automates and standardizes mapping, potentially speeding up treatment planning

While the potential is exciting, experts note that AI must be applied thoughtfully. Used without clinical oversight, these tools could lead to unnecessary interventions.

That’s why a “human in the loop” approach remains essential: AI brings speed and scale; clinicians bring expertise, empathy, and judgement. Together, they can deliver care that’s truly personalized – what I call care at the N of 1.

This is a hopeful step for lung cancer care, and a reminder that technology should enhance, not replace, the human touch.

What are your thoughts on this news?”
