“The evolving paradigm of cardio-oncology: from detection to prediction and prevention
The continuous advancement of cancer therapies has reshaped the priorities of cardio-oncology.
As patients achieve longer survival, the focus of the field is progressively moving beyond the recognition and management of established cardiotoxicity toward earlier identification of cardiovascular vulnerability, detection of subclinical changes, and individualized strategies for surveillance and prevention.
In this issue of Cardio-Oncology Bulletin, we highlight selected insights from ESC Congress 2026 that reflect this evolving approach.
Recent studies presented at the congress explored how artificial intelligence may enhance early risk assessment through routinely acquired cardiac data, how advanced imaging can reveal myocardial changes that remain undetected by conventional measures, and how clinical characteristics and treatment-related factors may improve risk stratification for immune checkpoint inhibitor–associated myocarditis.
Together, these findings emphasize a central direction for modern cardio-oncology: transitioning from a reactive approach focused on treating cardiotoxicity toward a proactive model centered on anticipating risk, recognizing early injury, and delivering personalized cardiovascular care.
