IHCRI-Rwanda (Internal Health Cancer and Research Initiative Rwanda) is honored to be recognized as a partner in advancing palliative care education and awareness in Rwanda.

We extend our sincere gratitude to ACREOL Global (African Center for Research and End of Life Care) for organizing this important Palliative Care Training and for providing IHCRI-Rwanda (Internal Health Cancer and Research Initiative Rwanda) with the opportunity to participate in this impactful initiative.

We highly appreciate Dr. Christian Ntizimira, Founder and Executive Director of ACREOL Global and author of The SAFARI Concept book, for his outstanding contribution to advancing palliative care knowledge and promoting an African-centered approach to understanding suffering, end-of-life care, and compassionate healthcare.

Today marked Day One of the training, bringing together healthcare professionals and future healthcare providers to strengthen our understanding of palliative care, research, and its vital role in improving the quality of life of patients and families.

During the session, we explored the progress of palliative care in Rwanda, including Rwanda’s remarkable achievement as the first country in Africa to introduce a national palliative care policy in 2011.

Discussions also highlighted the existing gaps, challenges, and the need to further integrate palliative care into healthcare systems.

A key highlight was the exploration of the SAFARI  Concept book, which emphasizes understanding patients’ experiences of suffering within their cultural, social, and community contexts. This approach reinforces the importance of providing compassionate care that responds to the realities and needs of African communities.

As IHCRI-Rwanda, we are committed to sharing the knowledge gained from this training with healthcare providers, communities, and stakeholders to strengthen awareness, promote evidence-based practices, and advocate for compassionate, patient-centered care.

We look forward to the continuation of this valuable learning journey and to transforming knowledge into meaningful impact for communities in Rwanda and beyond.

Palliative care is about dignity, compassion, and improving quality of life for every person living with serious illness.”
