“We were delighted to welcome Prof. Patrick Chinnery, Executive Chair of the Medical Research Council (MRC), and Dr. Glenn Wells, Deputy Executive Chair of the MRC, to our Sutton campus earlier this week.
It was a great opportunity to showcase the breadth of world-leading cancer research taking place across the ICR – and the vital role that MRC investment plays in enabling it.
During their visit, Prof. Chinnery and Dr. Wells met researchers working across a range of disciplines. Professor Paul Huang, Dr. Astero Klampatsa and Professor Janet Shipley each showcased their research into rare cancers, highlighting the ICR’s expertise in tackling some of the most challenging areas of cancer research.
They also visited our core facilities, seeing first-hand the specialist technologies and expertise that underpin our life-changing research, much of it funded by the MRC mid-range equipment scheme.
The visit continued with Professor Johann de Bono, who introduced the work of our Drug Development Unit, before Professor Uwe Oelfke demonstrated how MRC equipment funding is supporting our physics and radiotherapy research, including through two MRC-supported investments: FLASH SAARP and MR-Linac.
The visit concluded at the ICR Centre for Cancer Drug Discovery, where Director Dr. Olivia Rossanese showcased the multidisciplinary research taking place to identify new targets for therapy, validate the targets and then discover novel cancer therapeutics.
Together, these conversations and tours demonstrated the breadth of MRC support for the ICR – from major equipment investments to doctoral training partnerships – and how this investment enables the research, technologies and expertise that are helping us understand cancer and develop new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.
