Alique Topalian, Research Scientist- Survivorship and Supportive Services at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It has been incredible to attend the International Cancer Education Conference ICEC2025 at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
In addition to our oral session Melinda Butsch Kovacic and I presented a poster titled ‘Outreach to Help At-Risk Community Members and Cancer Survivors Become Research Ready’ focused on our community outreach and education initiatives. Encouraging participation in research is essential to diminishing cancer disparities and ensuring equitable access to innovation and high-quality care.
To facilitate open and meaningful discussions about research participation in the community, an engaging 19-panel graphic-style story entitled ‘Research Ready’ was co-created with diverse community representatives (including cancer survivors). A 5-panel Quick Start story was made specifically for outreach events.
The stories highlight the 3 P’s: the purpose of research, how research participants are protected from harm, and the importance of participation from people from diverse backgrounds.
‘Research Ready’ stories, particularly when shared by cultural insiders, effectively encourage community members to discuss and consider future research participation using the Research Study Review Guide.
These stories are free to use and we provide a Cancer Research Advocate training to teach community members how to have these conversations within their communities.
We also have over 50 stories covering a wide variety of other health topics including: cancer screening, dense breast tissue, reducing your cancer risk, HPV, nutrition, and more!.
If you are interested in learning more or brining this program to your community feel free to reach out!.
We are happy to partner!
Materials can be accessed via the Open Science Framework or We engage 4 health.”
