“September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – an important moment to spotlight the intersection of pediatric oncology and cardiovascular care.
Many pediatric cancer treatments, including anthracycline-based chemotherapy and chest radiation, are associated with an elevated long-term risk of cardiovascular disease.
Notably, these effects can emerge years or even decades after treatment concludes, making lifelong cardiac surveillance essential for survivors.
Cardio-oncology plays a critical role in this care continuum – enabling collaborative monitoring before, during, and after cancer therapy to help preserve long-term heart health without compromising cancer treatment outcomes.
This month, we recognize the resilience of pediatric cancer patients and survivors, along with the multidisciplinary teams dedicated to supporting their long-term health.”
