First Expert Workshop to Kick off Third EU Cancer Screening Report – IARC

IARC shared a post on LinkedIn:

“On 4–5 February 2026, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) hosted the first expert workshop to kick off the development of the Third EU Cancer Screening Report at its headquarters in Lyon. This two‑day meeting brought together specialists from IARC, DG SANTE, the Joint Research Centre (JRC), clinical networks, and national programme representatives from 33 European countries. The goal: to strengthen the evidence base that guides cancer screening policies across Europe.

Participants reviewed the EU cancer screening policy context, reflected on lessons from the Second EU Report, and explored the structure, objectives, and expected outputs of the upcoming report. The integration with the European Cancer Information System (ECIS) and the progress of the CanScreen-ECIS pilot were also key points of discussion.

Experts shared recent findings from the survey of screening programmes for breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, prostate, and gastric cancer, highlighting progress, persistent challenges, and the need for consistent indicators to support reliable comparisons across the EU.

The workshop concluded with consensus on indicator refinement, data collection processes, and next steps. The constructive exchanges underscore a strong shared commitment to producing a robust and harmonized Third EU Cancer Screening Report that will support early detection strategies throughout Europe.
