Last week the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association hosted a fireside chat with Julie, first female CEO of Takeda .
As a spouse, parent, and executive, I asked her something I’ve asked other CEOs (most recently Christopher Longhurst) too:
What does work-life integration actually look like as a CEO ?
She guards her calendar like a hawk.
That part I expected. Then she told me about bedtime.
When traveling, she buys two copies of the same book. She reads it to her kids virtually. If a call isn’t possible, she records herself reading it and sends it to her husband, so her voice is still what tucks them in.
That’s her definition of intentionality: not doing it all, but never letting distance mean absence.
This is what intentional leadership looks like. I’m adding it to my next leadership talk, because intentionality isn’t about balance. It’s about choices like this one.
