Humaid Al-Shamsi: Let Me Share Something About Toni Choueiri – A Mentor Who Goes the Extra Mile for Others

Humaid Al-Shamsi, CEO of Burjeel Cancer Institute (BCI) Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Happy Birthday to my dear friend, Professor Toni Choueiri.

Let me share something about Toni.

In medicine and academia, many leaders reach the top and become too busy to look back. Some unintentionally forget those still climbing the ladder. Others may not see the importance of supporting the next generation, especially those who come from different countries, different systems, and different starting points.
Toni is one of the rare exceptions.

He is not only a world leader in genitourinary oncology and kidney cancer, but also a mentor who consistently goes the extra mile for others.
Over the years, I have witnessed him supervise, train, and support dozens of clinical and research fellows. But what makes Toni truly special is that his mentorship extends beyond his own institution and beyond his immediate circle.
He has been a strong advocate for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) — a group that often faces unique challenges in navigating training, research, academic medicine, and professional growth.

Through his leadership and vision, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) IMG Community of Practice was established in 2022 with a mission to connect, mentor, guide, raise awareness, and find practical solutions for the challenges facing IMGs interested in oncology.

He also helped create a dedicated IMG session at American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), giving international medical graduates a platform, a community, and a voice.

This may sound simple, but for many IMGs, such support can change the direction of a career.
True leadership is not only measured by publications, titles, awards, or academic achievements. It is also measured by the number of people you lift, the doors you open, and the confidence you give to those who are still finding their path.

Toni has done all of that – quietly, generously, and consistently.
On your birthday, dear Toni, I want to thank you not only for your friendship, but also for your leadership, mentorship, and kindness.
You have inspired many, supported many, and opened doors for many.

Wishing you a very happy birthday and many more years of health, success, and impact.

Happy Birthday, my dear friend Prof. Toni Choueiri.”
