Winette van der Graaf: The HOLISTIC Study on Quality of Life Impact in Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Winette van der Graaf, President of the EORTC and Professor of Medical Oncology at The Netherlands Cancer Institute, shared Evelyne Roets, Oncology Resident at Antwerp University,  post on LinkedIn, about an article that She and Her collogues co-authored on eClinicalMedicine:

“The HOLISTIC study shows that our ‘standard’ first line chemotherapy, mostly doxorubicin, in patients with soft tissue sarcomas has a lot of impact on patients’ Quality of Life.

Important to discuss with patients, but also to share with insurance companies etc. when we want to bypass this first line ‘standard’ to allow alternatives which are better suited for patients with certain rare subtypes/molecularly profiled sarcomas and have less impact on their Quality of Life.”

Quoting Evelyne Roets post on LinkedIn:

“PUBLICATION ALERT!

Proud to share our latest paper published in eClinicalMedicine.
‘Health-related quality of life in patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma receiving first-line palliative chemotherapy (HOLISTIC): longitudinal results from a prospective, observational cohort study.’

Read the full open access article here.

In this prospective study of patients with advanced Soft Tissue Sarcoma, conducted across the Netherlands and the UK, we found that:

– Health-related quality of life significantly declined during first-line palliative chemotherapy, regardless of tumour response.
– Fitter patients experienced a faster decline in Global Health Scores.

Integrating PROs is key to informed decision-making, as patients should be aware that palliative chemotherapy may reduce quality of life despite limited survival benefit.

A huge thank you to all co-authors and collaborators from the HOLISTIC study for making this work possible!.”
