The first recorded appendectomy was performed in 1735 by Claudius Amyand, a French surgeon practicing in London. He removed a perforated appendix from an 11-year-old boy, a daring step at the time.
What was once a mysterious and often fatal illness became one of the most common and lifesaving emergency operations in general surgery.
Today, appendectomy is so routine that we often forget how groundbreaking that first case truly was.”
