Hesham ElGhazaly: What If the Next Global Model for Breast Cancer Control Comes from Egypt?

Hesham ElGhazaly, Elected President of the Executive Board at Egyptian Cancer Society, Professor of Clinical Oncology at Ain Shams University, and the Founder and CEO of Alfa Cure Oncology Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What if the next global model for breast cancer control comes from Egypt?

The Press conference by the Ministry of Health and Population – Egypt in presence of Prof. Mohamed Hassany, Assistant Minister of Health and Population for Public Health Initiatives and Projects, was more than an update on a national initiative—it was a glimpse into how Egypt is redefining its role in the global fight against breast cancer.

Behind the impressive figures lies a broader story: the evolution from delivering large-scale screening programs to building a future driven by digital health, real-world data, and equitable access to care.

Screening more than 23 million women is not simply a national achievement. It demonstrates what is possible when political commitment, healthcare infrastructure, and community engagement work together toward a common goal.

But perhaps the most exciting chapter is the one that is just beginning.

The scale of Egypt’s Presidential Initiative of Woman’s Health(PIWH)creates an unprecedented opportunity to move from screening to intelligence—transforming millions of real world health records into actionable insights that can improve prevention, optimize care pathways, and accelerate research.

The future lies in:

  • Interoperable digital health ecosystems that connect screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
  • High-quality health data that powers evidence-based policymaking and responsible AI.
  • Real-world evidence that informs research relevant to diverse populations.
  • Regional and international collaborations that position Egypt as a contributor—not only a beneficiary—of global cancer innovation.
  • Advancing health equity by ensuring that geography, income, or education no longer determine access to early diagnosis and quality care.

As countries work toward achieving the SDGs and UHC, Egypt’s experience reminds us that scaling impact requires more than technology—it requires vision, leadership, partnerships, and trust.

The question is no longer whether large-scale women’s health transformation is possible.

Thanks would never be enough for our valuable scientific board and executive teams for dedicated continuous precious efforts for almost 7 years and still doing their best.”
