Strengthening Patient Involvement in Cancer Policy in Greece – Hellenic Cancer Federation | ELLOK

Hellenic Cancer Federation | ELLOK shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Patient participation in cancer policy is not a symbolic add-on. It is a condition for better policy, better care, and better outcomes. At the 3rd Synergies Forum on Cancer, the Minister of Health, Mr Adonis Georgiadis referred to three important developments for cancer care in Greece:

  • The home delivery of High-Cost Medicines, a reform with a direct and meaningful impact on patients and families who have long faced unnecessary burden, travel and delays,
  • The legislative framework for the approval and reimbursement of biomarkers, a critical step towards equitable access to precision oncology and personalised treatment, which must now move decisively from legislation to implementation and
  • The decision to entrust ELLOK President with a leading role in the working group that will, within the following weeks, begin the development of Greece’s National Cancer Action Plan, publicly recognising ELLOK as an official interlocutor of the State on cancer policy matters.

For ELLOK, this is a milestone. It is an important institutional recognition that patient organisations do not belong at the margins of decision-making. They must be part of the design, monitoring and evaluation of the policies that shape patients’ lives. We accept this role with both honour and a strong sense of responsibility.

Our priority is clear: to help ensure that Greece’s National Cancer Action Plan does not become another document of good intentions, but a credible, implementable and measurable strategy with clear priorities, timelines, accountability and real impact across prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care and quality of life.

Progress made should be acknowledged. But the real test is implementation. Success will be judged by whether these reforms are delivered consistently, sustained over time, and translated into tangible benefit for every person living with cancer, regardless of geography, social circumstances or cancer type.

ELLOK will continue to work with seriousness, evidence, institutional responsibility and a clear commitment to the public interest and to the people behind the policy.”
