“On this year’s IWD 2026 we celebrate the women shaping the future of oncology.
One year after the launch of the Diary of an Oncology Leader initiative, the ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology Women for Oncology community reflects on the voices, experiences and leadership journeys shared by extraordinary women across our field. Through stories of resilience, courage, mentorship and vision, one message stands out:
Leadership in oncology is not about titles or the loudest voice- it is about impact. It is about lifting others and building teams and systems where diverse talent can thrive.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Give To Gain, reminds us that progress toward gender equity, diversity and inclusion requires deliberate investment from institutions, organisations and individuals alike.
When we invest in women’s leadership, safety and opportunity, we strengthen the entire oncology community and the care we provide to our patients.
Across oncology, women are not only participating- they are leading transformation in cancer care, research, education and health systems. Yet important challenges remain. Achieving true equity, inclusion and representation requires sustained commitment, mentorship and structural change.
International Women’s Day is therefore not only a moment of celebration but also a continuous call to action: to protect the progress achieved, to confront the barriers and challenges that persist and to continue building a future where every voice in oncology can be heard and empowered.
For every woman shaping cancer care.
For every future oncology leader.
The future of oncology needs your voice!
