Helena Harnik: FT3 Calls on ESMO to Reconsider Restrictions on Patient Advocates

Helena Harnik, Co-Founder & Chief Programs Officer at The Synergist.org, shared on LinkedIn:

“Patient advocates don’t just belong in cancer care – they’re essential to shaping it.

Yet at ESMO 2026, patient advocates and non-prescribers will be kept out of the exhibition area, a space critical for collaboration. This restriction claims to protect against promotional activities, but the reality is outdated – patient advocates already:

  •  Co-design clinical trials
  • Serve on EMA committees and HTA bodies
  •  Advise organizations like ESMO itself

Real progress in precision oncology requires cross-sector action. When conversations stay siloed, research and access stall. Patient advocates bring lived experience that drives patient-centered change – something even the WHO, WHA, FDA, and EMA recognize as vital.

 The solution?

Clear criteria for credentialed patient experts – affiliated with recognized organizations, trained, and conflict-declared – participating in non-promotional scientific exchange.

We’re calling on ESMO to clarify the reasoning behind this decision and work with us to find a solution before ESMO 2027.

Let’s make this the last congress where patient advocates are excluded.
FT3 is ready to convene a joint working group with ESMO, EFPIA, and patient organizations to set fair, workable criteria. The field has moved – it’s time to move with it.”
