Julian Cutland was always there, always ready to support, always generous with his advice, from the very first day of my tenure. I’ll never forget him handing me a handwritten dossier of his reflections and the journey ahead. That single gesture said everything about who he was.
His impact on childhood cancer care across South Africa, Africa, and globally will be felt for years to come.
My heart goes out to Sadie, Hillary, Clare, Zoë, and everyone who knew him. May his memory be a blessing.”

It is with profound sadness that the CHOC family says goodbye to someone who helped shape our story from the very beginning. Julian Cutland was a man of kindness, compassion, and quiet determination whose belief in supporting families through their most difficult moments helped create a legacy that continues to change lives every day.
In 1979, Julian and his beloved wife, Sadie, joined a small group of determined parents to establish CHOC. What began as a parent support group grew into a national organisation that has stood beside thousands of children, teenagers, and families facing childhood cancer and life-threatening blood disorders.
Julian was more than a founder. He was a believer in the power of community, kindness, and hope. His continuous dedication during CHOC’s formative years helped build the foundation on which our organisation stands today. The vision he and our other founders shared, that no family should have to face childhood cancer alone, remains at the heart of CHOC’s mission.
What makes Julian’s legacy even more special is that his commitment to CHOC never truly ended. Until recently, he remained actively involved, taking a keen interest in CHOC’s journey, celebrating its achievements, sharing its stories, and encouraging its continued growth. His passion for the organisation and the families we serve remained constant throughout his life.
On behalf of CHOC’s Board, Exco, staff and volunteers, we extend our deepest condolences to Sadie, Hillary, Clare and Zoë, as well as the extended Cutland family and all who knew and loved Julian.
