Hannah Wardill, NHMRC Investigator and Lead of Supportive Oncology Research Group at the University of Adelaide, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Great to see the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) shining a much-needed light on one of the most overlooked consequences of cancer treatment.
Some of the most life-altering side effects are also the least talked about. Patients often hesitate to raise them – worried they’ll seem ungrateful, take up valuable clinic time, or even jeopardise their treatment.
When those side effects affect intimate areas of the body, stigma, embarrassment and shame can make speaking up even harder.
At the Supportive Oncology Research Group (SORG), we’re determined to change that.
Working alongside lived experience experts like Nicola, we’re co-designing research to improve how these toxicities are detected, understood, prevented and managed. Every person affected by cancer deserves to have these experiences recognised, discussed openly, and treated with the same urgency as any other treatment side effect.
Thank you to the ABC for helping start conversations that have been silent for far too long.”
