This topic strongly connects with my work and interests in person-centered care, meaningful patient engagement, cancer control, implementation science, and health-system improvement.
As cancer care becomes increasingly sophisticated, one question continues to matter:
Can patients actually navigate the system we have created for them?
I see patient navigation as much more than coordinating appointments or providing information. It is a practical mechanism for translating person-centered care into everyday cancer services-connecting clinical pathways with psychosocial support, financial and social needs, health literacy, advocacy, and the lived experience of patients.
During the panel, I look forward to exploring several important shifts:
- From expecting patients to navigate fragmented systems – to designing systems that proactively identify and close gaps in care.
- From measuring navigation through activities and referrals – to measuring what matters: timely access, continuity, patient experience, reduced burden, and better outcomes.
- From designing services for patients – to co-designing them with patients and people with lived experience.
- From considering navigation an additional supportive service – to recognizing it as part of the infrastructure of high-quality, equitable cancer care.
One principle continues to shape my perspective:
Cancer care is not only what happens during treatment. It is the entire journey a person experiences through the health system.
I look forward to exchanging perspectives with colleagues from different health systems and contributing to a discussion that moves patient navigation from concept to measurable, meaningful implementation.
