“A patient’s voice should not stop at being heard. It should shape how care is designed and delivered.
I am pleased to join the Qatar Patient Safety Week 2026 webinar as a panelist, bringing a patient, caregiver and community perspective to:
‘Safe Care for Life: Advancing Patient Safety and Quality Across the NCD Journey.’
My contribution will focus on two questions that deserve greater attention:
Who is being missed?
How can health services and community organisations work together to reach people who are being missed by prevention, screening and follow-up pathways?
Who is supporting the caregiver?
How do we ensure that those supporting people living with chronic conditions have the knowledge, practical support and attention to their own wellbeing that they need?
The perspective I will bring connects cancer control, public health and patient advocacy: we should not expect people to overcome every barrier themselves. We should design care that understands and responds to their circumstances.
For me, meaningful engagement means moving beyond asking patients to share their experiences. It means recognising their expertise, involving them in decisions and showing how their contributions change services and policies.
It also means treating caregiver support as part of safer care – not as an optional extra, and not as a way to transfer professional responsibilities to families.
My message: design safer care with people, not simply for them.
I look forward to contributing to this conversation, moderated by Prof. Hanan Abdul Rahim, alongside colleagues bringing lived experience, clinical, policy, quality and innovation perspectives.
