Gwen Nichols: How Research Drives Policy Change for Young Cancer Patients

Gwen Nichols, Chief Medical Officer At Blood Cancer United, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“As a physician and researcher, my job has always been clear: leverage science to help patients survive, recover, and enjoy more years with their loved ones. At Blood Cancer United we know biomedical research alone isn’t enough. Through our Equity in Access Research Program, entering its fifth year in 2026, we’ve invested nearly $18 million to uncover why many patients miss out on care – and what solutions can change that reality.

Just as we pursue anti-cancer treatments to help heal the body, we advocate for public policies that improve our healthcare system and make it work better for patients.

For example: our research revealed devastating consequences when young cancer patients’ insurance coverage is interrupted. By sharing those findings with California policymakers, we helped make the case for critical Medicaid reforms. Now, families there can focus on healing instead of fearing coverage gaps.

This isn’t just research that sits in a journal. It’s about turning insights into action. And we’re just getting started.

More on this work.”
