Gustavo Monnerat: Effective Government is Needed for Safe AI Use in Health Systems

Gustavo Monnerat, Deputy Editor at The Lancet, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The recent OpenEvidence availability notice in Europe and the UK, alongside The Lancet World Report on medical AI regulation in Europe, highlights a larger question.

AI tools that improve access to high-quality medical evidence could become increasingly important for clinical work. But doctor-facing AI also needs governance.

The difficult question is proportionality. If regulatory pathways are unclear, costly, slow, or non-harmonised, responsible tools may struggle to reach clinicians and patients. If governance is ineffective, health systems risk unsafe use and weak accountability.

Where do you think the regulatory threshold sit for evidence-navigation tools used by clinicians?”
