”JAMA updated its AI policy
Main points:
- References. AI should not be used to generate, format, or manage them. Journals are receiving manuscripts with citations that don’t exist.
- Opinion pieces, Letters to the Editor, online Comments. AI drafting is now prohibited.
- Clinical images, illustrations, video, audio. Same, unless the AI is the research itself and it’s fully disclosed.
- Still fine: grammar checks, translation (after you’ve written the text), and AI data visualisation.
The AI debate in medical publishing has 2 parts: integrity and quality.
This guidance goes after both, AI fabricated content and low-value submissions. Authors are still responsible for what they submit.”
