Gonzalo Recondo: Remembering Esteban Cvitkovic and His Lasting Legacy in Oncology

Gonzalo Recondo, Executive Director – Global Development Lead Oncology at Amgen, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today would have been Esteban (Steve, “el Gordo”) Cvitkovic’s birthday.

I find myself reflecting on the mark he left in oncology and on those, like me, who had the privilege of his friendship and the many lessons he shared.

Steve was a deeply original scientist, known for his clarity of thought and his ability to see through complexity. His legacy in drug development transformed how modern oncology is practiced—from helping establish the hydration protocols that made cisplatin safe to use, to advancing oxaliplatin and multiple chemotherapies and treatment regimens that have and will continue to impact the lives of patients living with cancer.

Steve challenged assumptions, demanded rigor, and held high standards, always from genuine care for patients, who were his main inspiration. Through his mentorship, he shaped a global community of oncologists and scientists who continue his legacy today.

Steve you are deeply missed, but so very present.

Guillermo Chantada, Head of Outreach Program at Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona and Scientific Director of Fundacion Perez Scremini, shared this post, adding:

“I echo Gonzalo’s words. El Gordo has made a tremendous impact in oncology worldwide and I was also privileged of enjoying his wisdom personally. He will be always remembered.”
