Gonzalo López-Cuevas: Reflections from Sydney after the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025

Gonzalo López-Cuevas, Founding President of Cancer Warriors of Mexico, Treasurer at Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Reflections from Sydney after the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025

Sitting outside the Sydney Opera House —a global symbol of vision, precision and what a country can achieve when it dares to think long-term— I left this week with a renewed sense of purpose.

What became clear to me is this:

Health is not a sector; it is the foundation of opportunity. Without it, no nation can secure education, stability, economic growth or dignity for its people.

Technology is transforming the way we prevent, detect and treat disease, and countries that embrace innovation today will define the next decade of progress.

As a lawyer working in cancer control, I am more committed than ever to strengthening legislation, building smarter systems and ensuring that innovation reaches every community —not only the most privileged.

This week also reaffirmed a principle I’ve learned over the years:

Strong systems —financial, egal and institutional— are what turn vision into reality.

And in my role as Treasurer of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), this Summit reinforced the responsibility we hold to ensure that global cancer control is sustained by governance, financial stewardship and long-term planning that truly serve people.

This gathering brought together leaders from every world region, reminding me that the challenges of 2030 will demand courage, collaboration and a vision that goes beyond borders.

Australia taught me something powerful: Great systems —in architecture or in health— are built with intention.

And I am ready to help build what comes next.”
