Gilberto Lopes: Advancing Global Cancer Control Through Evidence, Policy, and Partnership

Gilberto Lopes, Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, UICC President-Elect Candidate, shared on X:

“Strong institutions. Shared purpose. Lasting progress. Our members are changing the future of cancer control!

As UICC approaches its General Assembly tomorrow, I reflect with gratitude on the privilege of serving on its Board and chairing the ATOM Coalition.

Our experiences expanding access to cancer medicines, advancing cancer policy through IASLC, and working with partners across countries have reinforced three lessons:

  • Evidence must inform policy.
  • Policy must translate into delivery.
  • Lasting progress depends on people and institutions.

None of this work happens alone. Credit belongs to UICC’s members, staff, patient advocates, clinicians, policymakers, and partners worldwide.

I am honored to be a candidate for President-elect and grateful for the conversations, ideas, and encouragement shared throughout this process.

The true measure of leadership is what we enable others to achieve.

Whatever tomorrow brings, our shared mission continues.”
