Gilberto Lopes: Reflecting on Six Years of Leadership and Service at UICC

Gilberto Lopes, Professor and Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:

“Six years of service. Countless friendships. One shared mission.

As my six years on the Board of the Union for International Cancer Control come to an end, I feel above all a profound sense of gratitude.

It has been a privilege to work alongside extraordinary colleagues from around the world, united by the belief that where someone lives or what resources they have should not determine their chances of surviving cancer.

Congratulations to my friend CS Pramesh on his election as President-elect, to Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu as she begins her presidency, and to the newly elected Board. I wish them every success.

My heartfelt thanks to Ulrika Årehed Kågström for her leadership, to Cary Adams and the remarkable UICC team, and to my fellow Board members for their friendship, trust, and dedication.

These six years have reinforced something I believe deeply: the strength of UICC lies in its members and in what we can accomplish together.

Listening to communities, strengthening local capacity, building partnerships, and ensuring scientific advances reach patients everywhere will remain central to my work.

Although this chapter of Board service is ending, the friendships, lessons, and shared commitments will continue.

Leadership is about service. And service does not end with a title. You will continue to see me with our ATOM and lung cancer initiatives – and much more.

Thank you, UICC, for an extraordinary six years.”
