Gilberto Lopes, Chief, Division of Medical Oncology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared on X:
“1 in 8 cancers worldwide was attributable to infections in 2024. A new Lancet Oncology / IARC analysis estimates 2.3 million cases – about 12% of all new cancers globally.
Largest contributors:
- H. pylori: 760,000
- HPV: 750,000
- HBV: 360,000
- EBV: 260,000
- HCV: 160,000
This is one of the clearest reminders that cancer control is not only about better treatment. It is also about vaccination, infection control, testing, treatment, and screening.
Much of this burden is potentially preventable with tools we already have.”
