Giannis Mountzios, Director of the 4th Oncology Department and Clinical Trials Unit at Henry Dunant Hospital Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“There are certain experiences in a person’s professional career that remain indelibly etched in their memory. I experienced one such particularly moving moment yesterday, when I had the honor of announcing, at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Oncology Conference in Chicago, the results of a global study demonstrating the effectiveness of an innovative treatment for brain metastases in small-cell lung cancer.
In a vast auditorium attended by 2,000 oncologists from around the world, we showed that the application of modern targeted and “smart” therapies can reverse the poor prognosis of patients with small-cell lung cancer and brain metastases, and effectively “equalize” it with that of patients suffering from the same disease but without brain metastases.
I thank God for granting me the opportunity to experience these unique moments of pride and fulfillment for what systematic work can achieve, even within particularly difficult environments such as the Greek reality, compared to the giants of foreign universities.
It was a day of joy and pride for all of Greek oncology, and I want to share it with all the Greek scientists who were there, as well as with those who work every day under the harsh realities in Greece.
I also thank everyone who contributed to the success of this global study — the patients, their family members and caregivers, and all those who supported me and believed in me.
I hope that Greek oncology will continue to lead developments and offer much, much more to our patients, who are fighting their own battle for life.”
