Gemma Peters: A Conversation About Cancer in England at BBC Breakfast

Gemma Peters, CEO of Macmillan Cancer Support, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“With the launch of the National Cancer Plan for England coming in a couple of days, it has been fantastic to kick off this significant week with a visit to BBC Breakfast. I joined Emma Vardy and Roger Johnson on the sofa this morning – you can catch me from 7.23am onwards.

We talked about the challenges that people living with cancer in England are currently facing – often because of who they are or where they live – that need to be addressed. It’s essential that the Plan focuses on the experiences of care that people are currently having, starting with those having the worst experiences, and designing with these front of mind. At Macmillan Cancer Support we hear day in and day out from people who aren’t getting the care they so desperately need, but it doesn’t have to be this way. When we do cancer care well, we do it excellently. We just need to make sure that this is everyone’s experience.

The National Cancer Plan for England marks an important opportunity – if we can get it right for cancer care, then we can get it right for healthcare across the board. What will be important now is making sure there’s the appropriate funding and resource to deliver it. Success looks like everyone living with cancer getting the care they need – and we all have a part to play, it can’t just be on the NHS to make this happen. And at Macmillan we’re working closely with Government, the NHS, healthcare professionals, businesses and community groups to lead the charge in making cancer care fair for everyone.”
