Gashaw Arega: It is Truly a Pleasure to Be Here at the SIOP Africa Conference

Gashaw Arega, Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Addis Ababa University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Attending the SIOP Africa 2026 Retinoblastoma Pre-Congress Workshop in Lagos

It is truly a pleasure to be here at the SIOP Africa Conference, joining colleagues from across the continent who are committed to improving outcomes for children with cancer.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this meeting is seeing pediatric ophthalmologists and pediatric oncologists come together to discuss retinoblastoma—particularly advancing conservative management strategies and improving local control therapies. This collaborative, multidisciplinary approach is essential to preserving vision and saving lives.

In Ethiopia, more than 200 children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma each year, highlighting the urgent need for strengthened systems of care. At Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, we established a dedicated Pediatric Retinoblastoma Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) in May 2022. Our team includes pediatric oncologists and fellows, pediatric ophthalmologists, neuroradiologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and psychologists, working together alongside family support groups to provide comprehensive care.

I am proud that the Ethiopian team is present at this important platform—sharing our experience, learning from others, and contributing to the collective effort to advance retinoblastoma care across Africa.

Looking forward to continued collaboration, shared learning, and stronger partnerships to improve survival and quality of life for our children.”
