From Conception to Action: ESPHO Is Born
A decade ago, Ethiopia had no dedicated Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (PHO) service. What began as a vision, driven by commitment and courage, has grown into a national movement.
With pioneering pediatric oncologists, PHO services were first established at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) – and then expanded to Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC), Mekelle Ayder Hospital, University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UoGCSH), and SPHMMC.
Today, the journey continues forward. PHO services are now established at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Wollega University, and Bahir Dar University, led by dedicated Pediatric Hematology–Oncology subspecialists.
We have expanded from one center to many – now more than six PHO treatment centers, organized by level of care – along with satellite clinics, including Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.
Where we stand today:
- ~20 Pediatric Hematologists–Oncologists
- More than 10 fellows are currently in subspecialty training
- A growing national PHO network serving children across Ethiopia
And NOW – a historic milestone:
ESPHO IS BORN!
