Fredrick Chite Asirwa, Chief Executive Officer, Principal Investigator at International Cancer Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The International Cancer Institute is proud to announce the launch of our Oncology Patient-Centered Nurse/Clinician Navigation Training Program.
Oncology patient-centered navigation is an evidence-based model of care in which trained professionals—such as oncology nurses, clinicians, and social workers—guide patients and their families through every stage of the cancer journey. By helping patients overcome barriers to care, coordinating multidisciplinary services, and providing education and support, patient navigators improve access, continuity of care, treatment adherence, and the overall patient experience.
The ICI Patient Navigator (CNP) Program is a comprehensive, competency-based curriculum that equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills required to deliver high-quality, patient-centered cancer care. The curriculum covers:
- Foundations of oncology and cancer care
- Patient-centered assessment and care coordination
- Therapeutic communication and patient education
- Symptom management and supportive care
- Psychosocial oncology
- Navigation across the cancer continuum
- Ethics and professionalism
- Leadership, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary teamwork
Throughout my years of providing cancer care across Africa, I have consistently identified patient navigation as one of the most significant gaps in our #healthcare systems. Even when diagnostic and treatment services are available, many patients experience delays, become lost to follow-up, or struggle to navigate increasingly complex healthcare pathways.
Well-trained patient navigators have the potential to #transform cancer care by ensuring that every patient receives the right care, at the right time, with the support they need.
This program is designed for nurses, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals committed to improving cancer outcomes through coordinated, compassionate, and patient-centered care.

Navigation is not about guiding patients through a hospital—it is about walking with them through one of the most challenging journeys of their lives. Together, we can strengthen cancer care systems by ensuring that no patient has to navigate cancer alone.
In addition Join us for our VTB series on Mondays and Thursdays 20th, 23rd, 27th and 30th July 2026 where we will give a sneak preview to this program through dedicated presentations on supportive care in Oncology with our Masters of Oncology Pharmacists as Presenters!”
