Fredrick Chite Asirwa, Chairman of the Board at Global multicenter Clinical Trial, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As I reflect on close to 2 decades of my interaction with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), I am deeply grateful for how this community has shaped my journey as a clinician, educator, researcher, and leader.
From my fellowship days – attending my first ASCO Annual Meeting 16 years ago – to today, every experience with ASCO has been both rewarding and transformative. I have had the privilege to serve in many capacities: Member of committees and councils, including the Multidisciplinary Cancer Management Committee, International Affairs Committee, Education Council, Academic Oncology Global Task Force, and ASCO/ESMO Global Oncology Curriculum Working Group. Hosting MCMC courses in Eldoret, Kenya (2012, 2013, 2016).
Faculty for ASCO educational activities, including the West African Research Workshop and the Nepal MDT Conference.
Contributing to my Connection, donating to Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation, and voting annually in ASCO elections.
Serving on the ASCO Board of Directors and liaison to SSA Regional Council. Peer-reviewing for ASCO journals and chairing/presenting at global sessions at the Annual Meeting.
Each of these roles was more than just a responsibility – they were opportunities for growth: learning new skills, collaborating globally, mentoring and being mentored, and gaining perspectives that continue to shape how I provide care for cancer patients.
If I had to choose what mattered most, I’d say it was the variety. Every task, committee, and connection built me up in different ways. Collectively, they helped me grow as a physician, a life-long learner, a global oncology advocate, and above all, as a better provider for my patients and caregivers.
Thank you, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), for being a home for growth, collaboration, and inspiration.
Here’s to continued learning and partnership in advancing global cancer care. Let’s join ASCO! For those who are members, look for the many opportunities that are available for volunteering. Check out our work is not OVER, until we can FULFILL the vision of ASCO:
To achieve a world where cancer is prevented or cured, and every survivor is healthy.
While doing this, you may get FASCO points too. See.”
