“I am very pleased to share the publication of our new Perspective in npj Precision Oncology.
Our central proposal is that successful cancer treatments may work not only by killing tumor cells, but also by disrupting the functional and spatial organization that allows heterogeneous cell populations to cooperate and maintain the tumor as a coherent and resilient system.
We refer to this organization as the tumor’s Group Phenotypic Composition (GPC). When the GPC is destabilized, the tumor may lose its ability to coordinate its functions, resist disturbances and sustain progression – even without complete tumor eradication.
This Perspective is the result of a truly international and interdisciplinary collaboration involving 20 researchers and clinicians from France, Australia, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and Canada, bringing together evolutionary biology, cancer biology, clinical oncology, liquid-biopsy research and mathematical modelling.
I am deeply grateful to all my co-authors for contributing their expertise and enthusiasm to this collective effort.
Our hope is that this framework will help stimulate new ways of thinking about cancer treatment: targeting not only cancer cells and their numbers, but also the organization and tumor-level dynamics that make malignancies robust.”
