Françoise Meunier: Right to Be Forgotten Emerges as Key Priority in Cancer Survivorship Policy

Françoise Meunier, Vice President of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, and Founder of the European Initiative on Ending Discrimination Against Cancer Survivors, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Cancer care does not end with treatment. It must also include survivorship.

As cancer survival continues to improve, Europe must ensure that cancer survivors are not held back by their medical history when accessing financial services, insurance, loans, or other opportunities.

I am pleased to share EDACS’ main recommendations on the Right to be Forgotten (RTBF), setting out why Europe needs a stronger legal framework to end financial discrimination against cancer survivors.

The RTBF must be recognised as a fundamental part of cancer survivorship and integrated into Europe’s approach to cancer care pathways. To achieve this, Europe should:

  • Establish a binding EU legal framework for the RTBF;
  •  Strengthen national protections and ensure effective transposition of the EU Consumer Credit Directive;
  •  Activate European legal remedies and accountability mechanisms.

Cancer survivors across Europe should be able to move forward with dignity, fairness, and equal opportunities.”
