“Fight CRC and the Collaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited Gastrointestinal Cancer (CGA-IGC) are proud to announce the recipient of the 2025 Early Career Award to Advance Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer Research—Max R. Van Belkum, M.D./Ph.D. candidate at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Max’s project, ‘Early-Life Antibiotics Supercharge Colibactin Mutagenesis: An Actionable Driver of EOCRC,’ explores how early-life antibiotic exposure may accelerate DNA damage linked to the rise in early-onset colorectal cancer. With mentorship from Dr. Mariana Byndloss, his research aims to uncover actionable pathways that could lead to new prevention and treatment strategies for younger generations.
This research grant supports innovative projects driving progress in science, clinical care, and advocacy for those affected by hereditary cancer syndromes, familial colorectal cancer, and EOCRC.
We’re honored to present this award alongside CGA-IGC, advancing our shared commitment to bold, meaningful research that can change the future of colorectal cancer.
