”Exploring the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley in Oaxaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for their cacti forests. It is one of the most biodiverse arid regions on Earth. Highly recommend a trip to Oaxaca and stopping on the way at this reserve! A highlight was definitely seeing a “pata de elefante” tree. An endangered tree that is very slow growing and known for its bulbous trunk it uses to store water. We were told hugging it brings good luck, so of course I couldn’t resist!
Reserves like this are a powerful reminder of how much conservation work goes into protecting biodiversity and water resources. Something we care a lot about back on campus. UCLA’s LEED Lab trains students to assess and certify campus buildings for sustainability, and UCLA’s water conservation program works to reduce potable water use campus-wide through recycling, drought-tolerant landscaping, and smart irrigation.”
