Barbara Gomes: Julia Downing and Felicia Marie Knaul’s Global Insights on Childhood SHS

Barbara Gomes, Researcher and Floriani Chair in Palliative Care shared a post by Julia Downing, Chief Executive Officer at International Children’s Palliative Care Network, on LinkedIn, adding:

“Hugely important paper, thank you Julia Downing, Felicia Marie Knaul et al for the amazing work making these refined global estimates for children.

To me a striking finding is the major shift from dying to living with serious health-related suffering (SHS):

‘The annual number of children experiencing SHS changed little between 1990 and 2023, but the SHS burden shifted from primarily decedents toward non-decedents, with non-decedents accounting for 59% of the total burden of SHS in children in 1990 to 81% in 2023.’

So many years of life of these little persons and their family members for us (palliative care, pediatrics, family, friends) to make a difference.”

Quoting Julia Downing‘s post:

“Excited to see our paper has been published.”
