Fawzi Abu Rous: Pope Leo XIV’s Recovery Highlights the Role of Early Lung Cancer Treatment

Fawzi Abu Rous, Medical Oncologist at Henry Ford Health, Committee member, ASCO Stage IV NSCLC Living Guideline Panel and ASCO Trainee Council, shared on LinkedIn:

“Pope Leo XIV’s recent lung cancer diagnosis and successful surgery are an important reminder that early detection can save lives.

I joined Paul W Smith on WJR 760 AM yesterday to discuss his diagnosis and highlight a few important messages:

  • Most lung nodules are benign, but appropriate follow-up is essential.
  • Lung cancer can affect people who have never smoked.
  • Early-stage lung cancer can be cured with surgery, sometimes with additional targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or chemotherapy.
  • Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US, making screening and early detection critical.

At Henry Ford Health, our multidisciplinary team is committed to advancing lung cancer care through innovative treatments, precision medicine, and clinical trials.

Wishing Pope Leo a speedy recovery!

Listen to the interview.”
