“Many thanks to Al-Arabiya Health for highlighting lung cancer by publishing an awareness video it recorded in November, coinciding with World Cancer Awareness Month.
Here are some important facts about lung cancer in our Arab world:
- Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths.
- Cigarette smoking is the number one risk factor, contributing to 60–70% of cases.
- More than a third of cases are detected in the late stages.
- Five-year survival rates may drop to 8% in some states.
- Early screening is done via low-dose tomography scan (LDCT).
- Global studies have shown that early screening reduces deaths in high-risk groups.
- Annual screening is recommended for those aged 50–80 years who have ≥20 pack-years of smoking, both current smokers and those who have recently quit.
- We urgently need effective Arab programs for early screening and smoking cessation.”
