“In the many years that have passed since the end of his career, I have often happened to ‘see’ Franco Baresi: the first captain of the first team of the heart, a very strong footballer yet so similar to his neighbor.
Thinking about it often is the sign of a memory that has remained engraved in the brain, in the years when we absorb the most information. Many go away over time. Those that remain, evidently, have something more that allows them to be retained.
Baresi, for me, means 1994. His absence in Athens, the Champions League final: AC Milan 4-0 Barcelona. The rest is Pasadena: nothing else to add.
Thirty-two years later, for work, it happened that this piece had been online on AboutPharma since Thursday and that the first captain (of life) disappeared 24 hours later, on the eve of World Lung Cancer Day. No one will celebrate this appointment that much, but the final experience of Baresi represents an opportunity to shine a light on the impact of the disease and on the opportunities that there are today to avoid it or find it in time (an aspect that is anything but obvious, in oncology).
Anyone who finds themselves in one of these starting conditions – 55-75 years old, who has smoked a pack a day for thirty years or has abandoned similar consumption for less than fifteen – knows that he has more than one opportunity to defend his health. Today they are still looking for them personally and insisting (as well as paying, often) to obtain access to potentially life-saving services. A not too distant tomorrow, hopefully, in the form of a right guaranteed by the National Health Service.
Perhaps the time has come to talk more often (almost to the point of boredom) about simpler aspects related to the disease. Trivialities, compared to NGS/target therapies/immunotherapy. But one of those so extraordinary that they can save almost all lives.”
