Evis Sala: Historic Establishment of Albania’s First National Cancer Institute

Evis Sala, Minister of Health and Social Protection of Albania, shared on LinkedIn:

“For the first time, Albania is establishing a National Cancer Institute, built on European standards and based on the model of the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan.

This is far more than a new institution. It marks the beginning of a new era for cancer care in Albania, one that places patients at the center and integrates clinical excellence, education, and scientific research under one national framework.

For the first time, Albania will also establish a Clinical Trial Unit, giving cancer patients access to innovative therapies, enabling participation in international research, and creating new opportunities to collaborate through the European cancer network. Alongside the Institute, we are building a National Cancer Network that will connect university, regional, and local oncology services into one coordinated system, ensuring higher-quality and more equitable care across the country.

This achievement would not have been possible without the extraordinary dedication of the teams at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, University Hospital Center ‘Mother Teresa’, our oncology professionals, Albanian physicians in the diaspora, and our international partners.

My deepest gratitude goes to the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan, whose expertise, partnership, and trust have been instrumental in shaping this transformative vision for Albania.”
