Evelyn Wong: How LLMs Can Be Safely Implemented Across 3 Domains of Cancer Care

Evelyn Wong, Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Honoured to part of and one of the co-leads of the ESMO Guidance Group on the use of large language models (LLMs) in oncology. Full publication in Annals of Oncology.

This guidance is the result of over six months of conversations, structured debates and small-group deliberations — exploring how LLMs can be safely implemented across three domains of cancer care:

• Patient-facing tools
• Clinician-facing decision support
• Background institutional systems

These efforts have now culminated in a multinational, consensus-approved guideline, published in Annals of Oncology. Grateful for the chance to work with like-minded colleagues who are passionate about shaping one of the most rapidly evolving fields in cancer care.

To Julien Vibert, Maria Alice Franzoi, Arsela Prelaj and Fiona Perdomo, thank you for trusting me and for all your incredible input towards LLM in patient care.

As we advance innovation, it must be paired with equity — ensuring benefits reach every patient. Just as importantly, the future of cancer care requires not only new technology, but also education of oncologists to confidently and responsibly integrate these tools into clinical practice.

Thank you Jakob Nikolas Kather, Miriam Koopman for your incredible leadership and congrats to everyone Loic Verlingue Mihaela Aldea Iain Tan George Pentheroudakis

Thank you, ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology , for the opportunity to contribute to this important initiative and for including 🇸🇬 in this important guideline!

Full publication.”
