European Cancer Organisation Calls for a Crucial Push for Tobacco-Free Europe by 2040

European Cancer Organisation (ECO) shared on LinkedIn:

“Over 25% of cancer deaths are caused by tobacco use. Now novel tobacco and nicotine products are luring more people into this deadly addiction.

A global study shows adolescents who vape are four times more likely to start smoking cigarettes than those who have never vaped.

That’s why, in its recent reply to the European Commission’s consultation on the Tobacco Products Directive and Tobacco Advertising Directive, the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) calls for:

  • Closing regulatory gaps for new and future nicotine products
  • Banning flavours and reducing features that appeal to young people
  • Stronger rules on packaging, labelling and digital promotion
  • Limits on nicotine levels and a ban on disposable e-cigarettes
  • Action to address the digital promotion of tobacco and nicotine products
  • More harmonised tobacco and nicotine regulation across the EU

This is a crucial opportunity to strengthen cancer prevention and keep Europe on track towards the Beating Cancer Plan’s goal of a tobacco-free generation by 2040.
