European Cancer Organisation shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In the EU, 40% of cancers are preventable. And many more are survivable. Early detection can often raise survival rates to 90% or higher.
The message is clear: cancer policy must put prevention and early detection at its core. This could mean over half a million lives saved annually and reduced financial burdens on national health systems.
In this year’s session, organised by the Prevention, Early Detection and Screening Network, experts discuss key policy priorities
- Working with all disease communities to push for faster progress on reducing tobacco consumption, including taxation and regulatory action on vaping. ‘We need courage and political will. We need you to keep pushing, raise your voices, and remind each decision-maker about the importance of prevention,’ said Romana Jerković MEP.
- Accelerating progress in the EU Cancer Screening Scheme, reducing inequalities between communities and deploying innovative strategies, mobile screening units, and screening at home
‘The aim is to provide cancer screening guidelines to inform politicians about the 6 types of cancer (breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, prostate and gastric), but at a high level, it is to reduce inequalities and elevate those who are most in need,’ said Sandra Caldeira, Head of the Disease Prevention Unit, Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
