Why Patient Involvement Matters in Clinical Trial Design – Europa Donna

Europa Donna shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Why is it so important to involve patients in the design and implementation of research projects? Because they ensure that research is grounded in real-life experiences – not just theory.

Europa Donna is a proud partner in the EU-funded Path-for-Young project, which has recently published a paper exploring the real patient journey in clinical trial participation.

The publication, ‘Understanding the patient journey: Barriers, facilitators, and expectations in joining a chemotherapy de-escalation trial among premenopausal patients with breast cancer’, examines the real-life factors that influence decisions around joining a clinical trial – from fear of recurrence and treatment side effects to trust in healthcare professionals, family life, and future plans.

This research highlights why patient involvement matters at every stage of a clinical trial. When patients actively contribute to the research process, studies are better able to reflect the realities, priorities, and concerns that shape treatment decisions and everyday life.

Within Path-for-Young, patients are not only participants – they are co-designing the research from its very beginning. Europa Donna brings the patient perspective directly into the project, helping ensure that the questions being asked, the outcomes being measured, and the overall direction of the study focus on what truly matters most to young women living with breast cancer.
