New ESTRO guideline: IMRT and IGRT for rectal cancer

A new technical guideline from the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology, published in Radiotherapy and Oncology, reinforces IMRT and IGRT as the standard of care for rectal cancer.

Key recommendations from an MDT panel:

  • Daily volumetric IGRT for all patients.
  • Mandatory OARs: Bladder, Bowel Cavity, Femoral Heads.
  • Supine position + comfortably full bladder.
  • Auto-delineation, auto-planning, and MR-only workflows are feasible (with proper QA).

Why it matters: These recommendations support safer, more consistent, and image-guided rectal radiotherapy across centres.”
