ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology shared on LinkedIn:
“Rebecca Fitzgerald receives the 2026 ESMO Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to cancer prevention and early detection, particularly to the development of the capsule sponge test to screen for Oesophageal Cancer.
She has also played a significant role in the molecular characterisation of the disease, leading the UK-based oesophageal cancer project within the International Cancer Genome Consortium.
This work provided the first ‘encyclopaedia’ of genome-wide molecular alterations for oesophageal cancer and is a key resource for the future development of tailored targeted therapies.

“It is my hope that early diagnosis will be far more proactive in the future than it is now, so that we can treat more effectively and achieve cure with organ preservation, even for patients with invasive disease.”- Rebecca Fitzgerald, ESMO Award recipient
