Raphael E. Cuomo: Introducing Survival Epidemiology as a New Lens on Health Outcomes

Raphael E. Cuomo, Professor and Scientist at University of California, posted on LinkedIn:

“A couple months ago, I published a paper in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology introducing Survival Epidemiology, a new field of study focusing on the nuanced patterns of post-diagnostic exposures and the analytical methodologies most appropriate to discern the patterns best associated with improved health outcomes.

I am deeply appreciative of the positive and energetic public reception of Survival Epidemiology, including media coverage by the The San Diego Union-Tribune, OncoDaily, lajolla.ca, WKYC Studios, and UrbanMatter. My hope is that this field will catalyze widespread use of large clinical databases in studies of health outcomes, more rigorous longitudinal methodologies leveraging these data, and greater thoughtfulness of post-diagnostic treatment patterns in observational studies, as well as integration of these approaches in curricula for medical scientist training.

Overall, coalescing these resources and techniques into this new area of medical science is all for the purpose of generating the scientific evidence needed to accomplish what really matters: improving the lives of patients suffering from disease.”
