Emmanouil Saloustros, President of the Board of Directors ΕΟΠΕ – HeSMO and Associate Professor of Oncology at University of Thessaly, shared a post by ΣΦΕΕ / SFEE’s on LinkedIn, adding:
“Innovation in oncology is not a cost. It is an investment in human life and the sustainability of the health system.
I had the pleasure of participating in SFEE’s press conference for the presentation of the new WifOR Institute study on the value of innovative medicines for Greek society and economy.
Data is particularly important: access to innovation not only leads to better clinical outcomes, but is associated with longer years of life, fewer hospitalizations, higher productivity and significant social and economic benefit.
In ΕΟΠΕ – HeSMO we believe that the discussion should focus on a key question:
How will we ensure that every patient in Greece has timely, equitable and sustainable access to treatments that can change the course of their disease?
Innovation only pays off when it reaches the patient without undue delays. This requires a stable and predictable framework of funding, evaluation and reimbursement, which will support both patients and the sustainability of the National Health System.
The treatment of cancer is an investment in the future of the country. And investing in innovation is an integral part of this strategy.
Congratulations to SFEE and all those involved in the study for highlighting such an important issue.”
Quoting ΣΦΕΕ / SFEE’s post:
“Every €1 invested in innovative medicines brings €6 in social and economic value to Greece.
Pharmaceutical innovation is an investment with a measurable return.
For health:
- 25,600 years of life that would have been lost, preserved.
- 252,400 fewer days of hospitalization, which is equivalent to the release of 691 hospital beds for one year.
On the economy:
- €557 million. euros of total social and economic value from an investment of 93 million. euros.
- €430 million. euros from productivity growth.
- €127 million. euros from savings due to the reduction in hospitalizations.
The findings of the WifOR Institute study were presented today at a Press Conference at SFEE’s offices.
Warm thanks to Giannis Athanasiou, Senior Researcher of the WifOR Institute, for the presentation of the study, as well as to Professors Stylianos Loukidis, President of the Hellenic Thoracic Society, Konstantinos Makrilakis, President of the Hellenic Diabetes Association, and Emmanouil Saloustros, President of the ΕΟΠΕ – HeSMO, for their substantial participation and valuable positions.”
